Using Google Docs with the iPad Mini

img_0685Hello Everyone,

I am sorry for not publishing on January 20th. I have been involved in The Winter Writing Contest held by Becoming Writer  as one of the judges since December 20, 2016, and this contest is now coming to a close. It has meant lots of reading and also writing many critiques. I have enjoyed every minute of it.

My iPad Mini came in handy, especially with  reading the individual  stories. The stories were uploaded to  Google Docs. So, I have had  the opportunity to learn how to  use my Google Docs app on my iPad Mini.  I discovered  how practical and easy it is to read my documents and notate my critiques notes at the same time.

So, if you’re looking for a good app to use on your iPad Mini for collaboration concerning your writing, try Google Docs. I think you will enjoy it.

Have a nice weekend, everyone, and be safe.

Shalom aleichem,

The iPad Mini – My Reader

img_0686

Happy New Year, Everyone, and I hope you made it safely over into 2017.

Thinking about buying an iPad Mini to read with? Good idea!

My iPad Mini is used expressly for reading. It is my Reader. Magazines, books, PDF, and whatever else I am reading are read from my Mini.

I do find it difficult to write with. Maybe it is because of my large fingers, but as a reading tool, it is fabulous. I also have my email program and of course, I share my photos and have the other standard programs that are already installed, but I do not use them.

img_0685And yes, the Kindle app in the Apple app store is for the iPad Mini, iPad Pro or iPad Air or any other Apple product, and it is easy to download your book purchases from any online bookstore such as Amazon.

So, if you are considering using the iPad Mini as a reader, go for it. I do not think you will regret it.

I’ll see you again on the 20th of January. Until then, be safe.

Shalom Aleichem,

Pat Garcia August 13 2016

Scrivo Pro and the iPad Pro

fullsizeoutput_acaOf course, many writing programs developed for writers work excellently on the iPad Pro. One of the writing programs, I use is Scrivener which has an iPad version called Scrivo Pro. I can copy my data from the iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Google Drive, Box or WebDav.   Scanning a document is also possible.   Scrivo Pro on my iPad Pro is especially handy when I am working on a revision and have an appointment at the doctor’s office or anywhere else where I think I will have to wait.  It is what I call dead time. So, I take out my iPad Pro and continue to work on the chapter in Scrivo Pro.

Scrivo Pro and the iPad Pro, a combination of software and working tool designed to help writers.

For your information, I am still participating in the National Novel Writing Month (NaNo). It ends November 30th.

Therefore, be safe and take care of yourselves.

I’ll see you on December 9th.

The iPad Pro – Its Cover – A Tip

Version 2

Hello Everyone,

Today, let me give those of you who have the iPad Pro a tip, or if you are planning to invest in one, this tip is crucial for you also.

DON’T SAVE BY NOT BUYING THE COVER THAT GOES WITH IT!

That cover protects your display screen and is a handy supporter when you want the iPad Pro to stand alone without holding it in your hand while writing. It saves you many heartaches.

That’s it for today.

Until the November 11th, be safe.

Shalom aleichem,

Pat Garcia August 13 2016

The Apple Pencil and The Notability App

The Apple Pencil

To say that the Apple Pencil and Notability partner up satisfactorily is an underestimation. The Apple Pencil and the Notability app are a perfect team. Unlike in Evernote, most of my notes in Notability are written by hand. You can share your notes, email your notes, store by importing them to Google Drive, Box, Dropbox, WebDAV, and iCloud.

You can even record and link your note or date your notes with the exact time if you prefer.

So, try your Apple Pencil with Notability. You will love it.

Using the Apple Pencil with Apps

iPad Pro and apple pencil chargingEvernote, Notability, Capture Notes, and Microsoft One Note go very well with the Apple Pencil. In fact, I would say they go hand in hand.  Today, we are looking at Evernote. Evernote also works excellently with its own Pen Ultimate. However, with my entire note taking apps, I use the Apple Pencil only.

Notability is excellent for note taking and marking up PDF Documents.

So how do we use the good old Apple Pencil?  If you are using Evernote, open up a new note.

  1. Tap on the stylus at the top and a new window will open.
  2. Select the thickness that you want to have. By that I mean a thin or fat point.
  3. Start writing.

Also in Evernote, you have to type in the title with the virtual keyboard.

In two weeks we will look at using the Apple Pencil with Notability.

Here is a sample of notes I wrote in Evernote concerning today’s article.

The iPad Pro and its Keyboard

img_0350

The iPad Pro has a keyboard, and it can be purchased with it or later. I hear you saying that is nothing new; the iPad Air has its own keyboard too.

img_0356

However, it is not as comfortable to use as the keyboard that belongs to the iPad Pro. I have both keyboards, and I can say that with the iPad 4, I preferred to use the virtual keyboard.

img_0351

With the iPad Pro, I love using the keyboard that attaches easily to it. It feels like I am using my computer keyboard.

img_0353

How do you attach it? Easy. The connection is on the side, and like a magnet, it aligns with the three points on the side of the iPad Pro.

Here is a picture from the side in my  office with paper everywhere, but I am a writer.

Until the September 30th, be safe.

The Apple Pencil

The Apple Pencil

I like the creativity I receive from using Apple products.

So, when Apple came out with the Apple pencil for the iPad Pro, it was natural for me to try it. It is a handy tool.

It looks just like a pencil. The majority of the developers who design apps for Apple have already updated their note taking apps to use the Apple pencil.

The apps I use are Microsoft OneNote, Capture Notes, Evernote, and Apple’s own note taking app.

The Apple Pencil and Cap

How do I charge it? I remove the top and plug it into my iPad Pro down at the bottom beneath the home button. Depending on how weak your pencil is, it takes twenty to thirty minutes to fully charge.

Working With The Split Screen On The iPad Pro

IMG_0104One of the nicest features of the iPad Pro is the split screen, which allows you to do more than one thing at the same time.

For example, if you are working in Pages or the Mac Version of Microsoft Word and would like to keep your email open, you can have both on your screen.

It is easy to do.

  1. Open up the first program you want to work in. It could be you would like to have Safari open, for example.
  2. Then, go to the side of your screen where the home button is and with your finger drag the second screen to the middle by touching a little tab you will see sticking out and drag the second screen out. If you have a program open in the background that program will come out on your second screen, but do not worry, you can change it. Go to the top of your second screen and pull down the little tab you see there. It will then reveal all the apps you have on your iPad Pro. Scroll down to pick the second program you would like to use. Voila!

See you again on September 2nd.

Until then, be safe.

Monday Funnies – Dog Wisdom Memes Part ONE…

Morning People,
Here are memes for the heart. Touching and yet so true. They reminded me of my cat that I had for twenty-two years. Clay was a sweetie. He would sit on the window bank waiting for me to come home. I could see him fussing, which he always did when I got home, demanding to know why I was late.
Wishing all of you a great week, and although I don’t say it often, hang in there. You can do it.

Introduction – Learning the iPhone 6s Plus and the iPad Pro

Hello Everyone,

It is about time I started doing what I said I was going to do and publish some ‘how to articles’ about my Apple products.

IMG_0242A couple of months ago, I purchased an iPad Pro.  Do I love it? The answer is Yes!

Will it take the place of my MacBook Pro? No. However, it is a welcomed tool for a writer like myself that has the habit of waking up late at night and starts writing.  So, I will be writing about my experiences with the iPad Pro and the features that I like the best.

apple-iphone-6s-plusA year ago, my iPhone 5 (yes, you are reading correctly, a year ago) was damaged. A defect, the display screen disconnected from the metal case, costs more to repair than getting a new one.  So, since last August, I have needed a new iPhone, but I was so in love with my iPhone 5 that I sat on my hands and did nothing because it was still working. However, the reaction time was slow; it took ages to execute and move between apps. So, I have recently acquired the 6s plus.

Therefore, I will be looking at the iPhone 6s Plus and the iPad Pro, starting next Friday.   I plan to do two articles a month.

Wishing you all of you a happy weekend.

Shalom aleichem,

Pat Garcia April 4 2016

Tech Tips for Writers #101: The Internet Button

Hello Everyone,
Here is some sound advice for you if you have problems connecting your laptop to the Internet, courtesy of Jacqui Murray’s Blog site, Word Dreams.
Shalom,
Pat Garcia

Tech Tips for Writers is an (almost) weekly post on overcoming Tech Dread. I’ll cover issues that friends, both real-time and virtual, have shared. Feel free to post a comment about a question you have. I’ll cover it in a future Tip.

Q: My internet stopped working on my laptop. Everyone else’s in the house works, but mine won’t connect. What do I do?

A: First: Make sure the laptop button that allows connection to the internet is on. More often than not, that’s the problem for teachers at my school. If it’s not that, it gets much more complicated. I’ll cross my fingers.

Tech Tip for Writers #106: Auto-add a Period, Caps Lock, and More on an IPad

Hello Everyone,
Here is an excellent tech tip for writers or for anyone who writes a lot with their iPad or tablet.
Shalom,
Patricia

Tech Tips for Writers is an (almost) weekly post on overcoming Tech Dread. I’ll cover issues that friends, both real-time and virtual, have shared. Feel free to post a comment about a question you have. I’ll cover it in a future Tip.

Q: Typing on the iPad keyboard is slow. You have to access two different screens to type most messages. How do I speed that up without buying (and installing) a separate QWERTY keyboard?

A: Here’s one time-saving tip: IPads and most Smartphones will add a period (which inconveniently is on the second screen) if you double-space.

Cool.

Double-tapping seems to be a secret shortkey for many tools. For example, if you double-click the shift key, it turns the CAPS LOCK on.

Book Quote Challenge: Day Three

Hello Everyone,

Here are my last three quotes for the Book Quote Challenge. Below I have nominated three people to continue the Challenge, and I have also put in the  link to each of  their blogs.

The Sour Cherry Surprise

“The truth is that I’m very good at forgiving. Forgiving is one o the things I do best.”

The Shimmering Blond Sister

“We may not be perfect. Far from it, in fact. But we always take care of our own. Never ever forget that.”

The Blood Red Indian Summer

“You made me realize that I’m not ready to be put out to pasture yet. I’m just like you––if I’m not helping someone, or at least trying, then they may as well dig a hole and cover me over.”

All quotes above are  taken from the book series, Berger & Mitry by David Handler.

My three nominees for the Book Quotes Challenge are:

Book Quote Challenge: Day Two

I have been reading the Berger & Mitry Crime Fiction Series by David Handler.  There are ten books in the series so far, and I’ll be reviewing a book a week, starting with February 26 on my book review blog. In my opinion, this is another great crime solving couple who will go down in history like Miss Marple and Mr. Stringer, Sherlock Holmes & Watson and Thomas and Charlotte Pitt, William Monk and Hester, and Peter Wimsey and his ladylove Harriet Vane.

Therefore, all of my quotes for the Three-Day Book Quote Challenge are coming out of this series.  Today, I have chosen the first book of the series, The Cold Blue Blood.

Quote 1.  Mitch stood there a moment in stunned silence, realizing to his own astonishment that it had finally happened. One door was closing and another one was opening.  Today was the day. As of this moment, I am moving on.

The Cold Blue Blood

Quote 2.  “Day One- Have found it,” Mitch scribbled in his notepad. “Have at long last discovered the land that time forgot. All is quiet––too quiet. Have queer feeling that someone, or something is following me.”

The Cold Blue Blood

Quote 3.   A conversation between Mitch Berger and Desiree Mitry about her talent.

“You were hoping I’d tell you that you were no good––so you could forget about the whole thing. Not a chance. I won’t do it. You are good. And you know it. And you’re scared to death. I don’t blame you, believe me.  Talent is a very frightening thing.”

“Now why do you say that?”

“Because if you have it, you have to do something with it. You owe it to yourself.  Wasting talent is one of the deadly sins.  Maybe it didn’t make the Bible’s top seven, but it’s right there at the top of mine. You must study and work and grow. And that’s where it gets scary. Because the people closest to you will think you’ve gone a little nuts. They will not understand why you’ve quit your job––“

Book Quote Challenge: Day One

Many thanks to Ajoobacats for inviting me to participate in the Book Quote Challenge.

I have to present three quotes per day by an author  of my choice for three consecutive days.  My quotes for today come for The Hot Pink Farmhouse by David Handler.

“Think of yourself as growing one day younger each and every day for the rest of your life.”

The Hot Pink Farmhouse by David Handler

“Children in pre-school art classes can do three-point perspective without a hitch. They ace it. It’s only we adults who have trouble with it. You must break free of your adult mind. See as a child sees. Accept as a child accepts.”

The Hot Pink Farmhouse by David Handler

“Life is freakin’ weird. Get used to it.”

Viewpoint: Precedent Historical Repetition

History is repeating itself. The age of Humanism is slowly marching off the world stage, but what comes next?  Precedent historical repetition says that sooner or later another nation will rise. After all, the human race has lived through the rise and fall of many great nations. History is repeating itself.

The situation among the cultures is precarious. The Iron Curtain is slowly rising out of its sleep and finding its home among nations that want to protect their economy and the pure ethnicity of their race. Cultural diversity is leaving the stage. History is repeating itself.

The rudimentary ordinances of nature are being disobeyed. What was once one plus one equals two is now one plus one equals whatever makes you feel good. History is repeating itself.

Over one million people are on the run. The number of people who have died so far on the ground, in airplanes, in the seas is heartbreaking. Men talked, yet children cry, children die, women cry, women die. History is repeating itself.

In every corner of the world, there is tumult. Philosophical antagonism demands closed borders.  An antagonism based on supremacy, it has plummeted us even nearer to a world war. It enacts to dominate, to make all men and women think alike. This antagonism has no mercy, no understanding, and no love. History is repeating itself.

“What are you doing, Child?” The Prophet asked.

“Watching the New Year come in over the earth.”

“Oh, that’s nice.”

“No, it’s not nice Prophet. It’s sad.”

“Why, Child. What do you see?”

“In every corner, I see children starving, women crying, human life wasted. Prophet, don’t people ever read about the past?”

“No, Child. That’s why History repeats itself.”

Happy New Year Everyone,

Alles Gute Zum Neuen Jahr Alle,

Bonne Nouvelle Pour Tout Le Monde,

Feliz Nuevo A Todo El Mundo,

Felice Nuovo Per Tutti,

Viewpoint: A Commentary on Christmas

The woman was heavy laden with child, and her husband looked at her with concern. Of course, he had to go. The census was mandatory. As he regarded his wife, he knew the journey would not be easy.

What is a few hundred miles or kilometers today? Catch a train to Hamburg from Frankfurt, Germany, and you arrive in four and a half hours, a plane ride from Augusta to Atlanta, Georgia is fifty-five minutes. However, this man did not have these comforts. His Mercedes-Benz was a donkey.

He observed his wife as he pondered over the trip ahead. Leaving her behind was not a consideration; in her was the hope of the nations, the salvation of the human race, and a shiver went through him as he thought of what could happen ahead. Thieves and robbers on the route and a desert where the temperature dropped at night were between the two cities, and ninety miles on a donkey was not a one-day ride.  He figured he might be able to travel 10 miles a day, but even that would be hard considering that she was heavily pregnant with child.

Today the significance of this event has been revised; the hardship erased. The importance of this Child’s birth has fallen into abnormality.

Soon, it is Christmas.

For me personally, it is the time when I reflect backward to that birth in Bethlehem with Thanksgiving in my heart.

His birth changed History;

His birth changed my life and gave me a vision with purpose;

The Son of God came to earth so that I could have the right to be accepted in the Beloved.

Merry Christmas to you,

Buon Natale a te,

Joyeux Noël à toi,

Frohe Weihnachten zu Ihnen,

Feliz Navidad a usted.

Monday Funnies – Is there a Doctor in the house? Cartoons…

Good Morning Everyone,

This morning I have laughed until tears were streaming out of my eyes. In fact, there is still a big smile on my face. Why? You ask.

Well, I read the MONDAY FUNNIES that Chris posts on his Story Reading Ape Blog.

This week the funnies are all about doctors and some of them tickled my funny bones because there’s some truth in them, and without realizing it, I found  myself laughing at myself.

So grab a coffee and take a minute to sit back and laugh.

Have a great week and for those of you who don’t know it, I’m participating in the NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). I don’t mind you sending up positive affirmations that I’ll make it through and reach my goal of sixty thousand words.

The Seventy-Nine-Words Story Challenge

amercian-bald-eagleHello Everyone,

I don’t know when it happen, but I remember reading the MONDAY FUNNIES, one morning and bursting out with laughter. I was hooked on the funnies. Laughter is not typical for me before eleven a.m. If you ask the people very close to me, they will tell you, Pat is usually unapproachable before eleven.

Honestly, as a writer, I find myself experiencing highs and lows.   It’s a writer madness that takes hold and motivates me to write what I see as I write about the world I live in during the early morning hours.

Thus, Chris Graham’s, CHRIS THE STORY READING APE’S BLOG has become a necessity in my life. It touches the humor within me, and laughter comes bubbling out.

Recently, Andrew Joyce, an author, sent out a dare, a seventy-nine-words dare to writers and it has been running on Chris’s blog as the Seventy-Nine-Words Story Challenge. Each week, stories are chosen as the best submitted. This week, one of my stories from The Child and The Prophet (a W.I.P.) was among the ones chosen and to be very honest with you that makes me happy.

To read my story and the stories of the other participants, please go to the link below. It’s only 79 words, and drop a line on Chris’s blog and let him know you were there and me too, of course.

It’s raining in my part of Europe. I woke up this morning and the raindrops were beating against my window pane.

So, all the more important it is to start my week with the MONDAY FUNNIES with MAXINE. This little old/young lady will make the tears come in your eyes with her way of looking at life. Her wisdom amazes and after laughing your head off, you can’t help but wonder at the hidden truths she expounds upon.

Who are these its?

Forgotten and unacknowledged,

Running, pleading, fearing for their lives.

These its,

These puny its have no voices.

The brunt of war carried in their flesh.

While men pat themselves on the back for heroism.

These its,

These puny its have no value.

Oh, women of the world,

I know today is Mother’s Day,

But your its are being attacked.

Bellies impregnated by rape,

Faces scarred by encrusted, scabrous hands,

Disfigured bodies with lost limbs,

These its,

These puny its have no voices.

Slaughtered,

Murdered,

Gassed,

Shot down,

Their psyches damaged.

These its,

These puny its have no value.

Hands grabbed,

Bound and cast to the ground,

Legs spread wide and raped,

Whore,

Bitch,

Slut,

Cunt,

Their Psyches branded.

These its,

These puny its have no voices.

Oh, women of the world,

Today is Mother’s Day,

But these its are our sisters,

Shouldn’t our voices become theirs?

This poem is dedicated to every woman trapped by war at this moment wherever they are, in whatever country.

Happy Mother’s Day.

If anyone were hoping that the innovation and drive to be the best would diminish at the Apple Corporation, or that the quest for perfection  would cease to exist  and reduce itself to the status quo of  waiting and copying what everybody else is doing in the digital world,  or even thought that the Apple company’s ability to create and invent continuous high performance devices that would outdistance their competitors  had ended with the departure of its founder, found out on March 7, 2012 that they had been living in a world of make-believe.  Reality hit everyone  with the unveiling of the iPad 3, and the explosion that blasted out was loud and clear and could be heard all around the world. Apple has done it again!

Not that Apple ever gave anyone the impression that they were lost or wringing their hands for new ideas after the sad departure of its founder, but it was generally assumed, in my opinion, by many of Apple’s competitors that they now had time to catch up and  breathe and set their own distinguishable mark  in this highly competitive field.  Some of them probably saw themselves sitting in the front seat on the number one spot, taking over the number one position as the best tablet PC ever–that is until the presentation on March 7, 2012, when Apple threw many of them into a frenzy and sent many research and development people from the different companies back to the drawing board to begin again.

With the introduction of the iPad 3, Apple has shown us again, who is the King on the road among  tablet  PCs in this Post PC era.  The iPad 3 with its HD 1080p resolution, which is even better than the HD on your television, with its image stabilization and its voice dictation, is more than enough to astonish any consumer.

However,  Apple did not satisfy themselves with marginal development. No,  they  stepped out and put a power punch behind the iPad 3 that will take its competitors a little time to recover from. It was their knock out punch as they presented the iPad 3 with its Retina Display,  and threw us into the future with its next generation wireless 4G with DC-HSDPA , LTE, and HSPA+,  and let us not forget to include the fact that they kept the 3 G, so that is also 3G compatible all over the world.

The Apple family of geniuses then crowned the moment with its new A5X chip––the new quad-core powerhouse.  One can only say, “Wow!”

The iPad 3 goes on sale on 16 March in several major countries. A week later, there will be a roll out to other major countries. So please do not panic, there will be enough iPad 3’s for everyone.

I am personally looking forward to its release.  Having already  invested in the first generation iPad, I hesitated to invest in the iPad 2, because I had the feeling that the iPad 3 was going to be a bomber, which it was. The blast was felt everywhere.

As they say in the neighborhood that I grew up in, “they done done it again!”  It is not the best English in the world, because it is slang, but very appropriate for the presentation event of the iPad 3 held on March 7,2012,  “Apple done done it again!”

So, Apple,  thanks for setting the record straight, when it comes to Post PC Era devices you are simply the best!

Ciao,

Pat Garcia
